Basic Narrative Theories

Todorov and Propp both came up with structures for analysing narratives.
Todorovs ideas of a narrative structure was thought to be present in nearly all kinds of movies. This arrangement consisted  of five points:
  •  The Equilibrium portrays the state and condition of whats happening at the beginning of the movie. It is clarified  that there is no difficulty or disturbance yet. For most the part, the equilibrium is shown to be in a good position, sometimes in a bad however, if this is the case it eventually turns into something better. This is known as the New Equilibrium which will be explained further on.
  • The Disruption is what causes the difficulty/problem and what motivates the hero in taking action. Therefore there is an obvious assumption that it is the villain which causes the disruption and affects the Victims.
  • The Disequilibrium is what expands on the disruption and causes threats for the hero, which makes the hero react to these difficult obstacles. The helper helps the hero by giving him information which is used to cause the resolution.
  • The Climax is when two possible resolutions remain.
  • The Resolution is purely as it means.Things are put back in balance the equilibrium is restored but it is a new equilibrium which is often better.
Propp came up with the concept of character types, this consisted of the following:
The Hero overcomes various obstacles in order to achieve resolution at the end. By doing this, the conclusion is he would have defeated the villain and given the reward of the princess.

The Princess, most the time is the Heros reward at the resolution in the narrative structure. At this point of the story the Hero will have proved his courage and bravery to her father and herself. This provides evidence for the audience on how strong he is.

The Villain holds a character who tries to prevent the hero from achieving what he wants and stops him from restoring the equilibrium. The villain is usually the cause of the disruption caused in the first place, therefore the hero must defeat him.

The Donar is someone in the plot who provides the hero with relevent information such as knowledge on a particular situation or an object which gives him an opportunity for achieving the given obstacles.

The Sidekick is the heros companian who will accompany and aid him throughout his journey.
